The Real Cost of a Royal Caribbean Cruise: What Actually Paid

You’ve seen the ads. You’ve seen the website. You’re thinking, "Okay, I can get on this ship for $400 per person. Let’s go!"

Fam… let’s keep it real.

We just got off Wonder of the Seas, and we are going to break down the true cost of a Royal Caribbean cruise. We’re talking about the "nickel and dime" reputation, the hidden fees, and the difference between the price you see and the price you pay.

We aren’t gatekeeping anything. Here is exactly what we spent, down to the penny.

Part 1: The "Get On The Ship" Price

First, let’s look at the base numbers. This is what it costs just to get your foot on the gangway.

For this sailing, our base fare was $428 per person. (Full disclosure: That was a Casino Rate. The regular rate for an interior room on this sailing was around $1,280.)

But that $428 wasn’t the final number. We had to add:

$265.24 in Taxes & Port Fees (You can’t escape these, player. Everybody pays.)

$148.00 in Prepaid Gratuities

Total "Get On The Ship" Cost: $841.25

Part 2: The "Extras" (Internet, Drinks & Dining)

This is where the budget usually gets blown. Could we have cruised for just $841? Yes. Did we? Absolutely not.

Here is what we added to enhance the experience:

1. The Internet Package

Cost: $183.92 Royal Caribbean has the best internet at sea, but it costs about $27 per person/per day if you buy it onboard. We work while we travel, so this is a non-negotiable for us.

2. The Drink Package

Cost: $651.20 This is the Deluxe Beverage Package (alcohol included).

Price Range: Usually $63 - $125 per person/day.

The Math: An average cocktail is $15 + 18% gratuity. Even if we drink minimally, the individual drink costs add up fast. For us, the package just makes sense.

3. Specialty Dining

Cost: $450.00 (For 3 Restaurants) The buffet (Windjammer) and Main Dining Room are included in your fare. But Stanley is the "bougie" one, and he loves a steakhouse.

Cost: Ranges from $25 - $70 per person.

Worth it? Places like Chops Grille or 150 Central Park are sexy, elegant, and the food is next level. It’s not required, but it’s a vibe.

The Grand Total (So Far...)

We went from a base of $841.25... Added the internet, drinks, and dining...

Total Ship Cost: $2,126.36

That is over $1,200 in extras just for the two of us. And fam, we haven't even left the house yet.

Part 3: The Hidden Costs No One Talks About

When you are budgeting for your vacation, you cannot ignore the costs that happen outside the cruise app.

1. Pre-Cruise Spending (~$500+)

Let’s be honest. You aren’t going on a cruise with your old clothes.

Hair, nails, and grooming.

New outfits and shoes.

Luggage upgrades. Factor this in!

2. Shore Excursions ($35 - $200+ per person)

Our rule: If it’s a new destination, book an excursion. Don't just walk around the port. Get out and see the culture!

Pro Tip: We recommend booking through the cruise line. Is it more expensive? Yes. But if you take "Willie's Fish Boat" and get stuck, the ship will leave you. If you book through Royal, the ship waits.

3. Travel Insurance (~$150 - $289)

We see people on social media crying because life happened and they lost thousands of dollars. You wouldn’t drive a car without insurance. Don’t travel without it.

Cost: Usually around $75-$100 per person.

Reality: It covers medical emergencies and travel delays. It does not cover "I just changed my mind."

4. Onboard "Sneaky" Costs

Once you are on board, there are temptations everywhere:

Room Service: ~$9.95 per delivery. (By Day 3, when you are "peopled out" as an introvert, this is worth every penny.)

The Casino & Arcade: Easy ways to lose track of budget.

Spa & Salon: They add an automatic 20% gratuity.

Laundry: Because who wants to pack dirty clothes?

The "Real Truth" Summary

When you add the flights, the hotel the night before, the Uber to the port, the outfits, the insurance, and the onboard spending...

Our "Real" Trip Cost: ~$3,500.00

Don't Fall for "Cruise Fare Envy"

We heard someone on the ship say, "We got on this cruise for $400!" Don't let that fool you. That is the Presenting Price. It’s usually for an interior room (no window) and includes zero extras.

Also, remember Dynamic Pricing. Cruise fares change like airline tickets. As demand goes up, the price goes up. You might see a deal today that is gone tomorrow.

Confused by the Math? Let Us Help.

Does all this math have your head spinning? Are you worried you’re going to book a "cheap" cruise and get hit with a $2,000 surprise bill?

You don’t have to figure this out alone.

At Code Fun Travel, we know the real prices. We know which extras are worth it, and which ones you can skip. We help you plan the total cost upfront so you can just show up and enjoy the vacation.
